Our hōjicha is a carefully crafted blend of pruned sencha leaves and tencha stems (a by-product of matcha production). The stems contribute a gentle sweetness and depth to the tea.
Expertly roasted at approximately 180–200°C, the tea develops rich, toasty and nutty aromas, complemented by subtle notes of coffee and caramel.
No. 51 - Karigane Hōjicha
About Hōjicha:
Houjicha is made from Sencha leaves and stems and roasted at a high temperature until the delicious nutty flavors come out and the tea is golden brown. Both bitterness and astringency are largely eliminated. Hōjicha is a tea that is enjoyed in Japan by all age groups and in all situations. Due to its tender flavor, the tea is easily digestible, whether it is hot or cold. This is also helped by the fact that roasting sublimates the caffeine (a phenomenon in which the caffeine changes directly from solid to gaseous) and the tea is nearly caffeine free. From the youngest to the oldest, all can enjoy Hōjicha as a refreshment or to quench their thirst.
