In Japan, it is said that the first tea picked of the year is the most delicious. "Shincha" literally means "new tea" and describes the first tea of the new picking season. During the long, cold winter months, tea trees are dormant, as if they are hibernating. During this time, the tea trees store nutrients to sprout vigorously in the spring. The most significant feature of the new tea, or shincha, is that it offers everything: a refreshing aroma, fragrance, and the taste of young spring.

This Superior Sencha is specially selected and carefully picked by experienced hands, far superior to leaves harvested by machine. It is made from Yabukita tea leaves grown on the scenic hills of Wazuka Town, just south of Uji City. The leaves are masterfully processed into beautiful, spindly, heavy, dark, and fragrant strands. A key characteristic of Sencha from Uji is its refreshing taste and, compared to other growing regions in Japan, its lighter color.

  • About Sencha:

Sencha is the most commonly cultivated and consumed type of Japanese tea. The tea plants are not covered and therefore exposed to a lot of sunlight, which gives the tea a lively and clear flavor. Because the leaves traditionally grow in full sunlight, Sencha contains more of the positive nutrient catechin than other green teas, giving the tea leaves a yellowish green color. Nowadays, Sencha leaves are also covered in the last days before harvest to suppress bitterness and astringency.
